Is learning history important in your life? As a history teacher obviously I feel that knowing and studying history not only of your country, but the history of other countries and other cultures is very important. There are some people who will argue that learning history, especially as one gets older, such as in college, is of little importance because it may not have anything to do with their upcoming careers and job opportunities. They will say “I am going to be a business major or a journalism major or an engineering major, so why waste my time learning about things that happened twenty, forty, one hundred, or even five thousand years ago? Why waste time learning about history when I should be focusing on my specific college course work.” However, these people will be missing out on what I would call “a complete education.” I would hope all of my students one day when they are out of college and married can have an intelligent conversation around their dinner table or when they are out with friends on whatever topic comes up; entertainment, their businesses, jobs, and definitely history. What do you think? In middle school and high school you will be forced to take history classes in order to graduate, but as you move on in your education careers you will have many options. Will you take some college level history classes regardless of your major or will you not see learning about the past as relevant to your future?
